Assessments conducted at national and international have revealed the low learning outcomes in reading for primary school students from Burkina Faso, Niger and Senegal. These three countries have comparable educational and social realities, and have expressed a need for increased efforts in this domain, given that acquiring the basic reading skills in the early years of primary school has a determining impact on all other learning outcomes.

In order to respond to this need, the IBE has launched the project “Learning outcomes in early grades: integration of curriculum, teaching, learning materials and assessment” aimed at improving primary school students’ reading outcomes in Burkina Faso, Niger and Senegal. This project, funded by the Global Partnership for Education (GPE), will be implemented over a period of three years.
